The Grand Palm

The Grand Palm Hotel in Gaborone, Botswana.

There's just something about the photo above that makes me reminisce about December/January. Taken at The Grand Palm in Gaborone, Botswana, it is a prime example of the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words". Except maybe this picture is worth more than a thousand words.

So yeah, it's just a picture of palm trees, but the events that took place beneath those very palm trees are the ones that made my Christmas break what it was. The smiles and the tears. The walking, the skipping and the running. The hi-5s and the hugs. The hellos. And even the goodbyes. Spending a majority of my 5 week stay in Botswana at The Grand Palm meant that by the second week, the staff and I were basically speaking on a first-name basis.

If you ever do find yourself in Gaborone, The Grand Palm is a great place to stay. If you're just looking for a place to have some snacks or a meal with friends, head to the back of the hotel where you will find The Fig Tree restaurant/bar area. Although the service can be a little slow on busy days, the food isn't bad at all.

Looking back at the pictures of the palm trees and thinking back to December 2015, I realised that it was rather odd. Being back home, but still having that feeling of being seven thousand miles away. Some of the people that made me want to come back home were nowhere to be found. Some, by uncontrollable circumstances, some by choice.
